Building Permits and Inspection Requirements

All new building, remodeling, and demolitions need to have permits and will need to be inspected upon completion for code compliance for the safety of our residents.  Residents and Contractors will need to fill out an application for a permit or come by the Neighborhood Services office to apply for the permits.  

The Neighborhood Services office is located on the 2nd Floor of City Hall-118 W Central.  The office can also be reached by phone at 620-441-4420.

EFFECTIVE SEPTEMBER 1, 2012 we will be updating our codes to the following:
2009 International Building Code
2009 International Residential Code
2009 International Plumbing Code
2009 International Mechanical Code
2009 International Fuel Gas Code
2009 International Fire Code
2009 International Property Maintenance Code
2009 International Existing Building Code
NFPA 70: National Electric Code, 2008 Series
Kansas Uniform Disaster Building Damage Assessment Inspection and Recovery Plan
1997 Uniform Code for Abatement of Dangerous Buildings.

10 Tips for Making Sure Your Contractor is on the Level

1. Hire only licensed contractors.

2. Check the contractor’s license number by calling 620-441-4420

3. Get three references, and review past work.

4. Get at least three bids.

5. Get a written contract and do not sign anything until you completely understand the terms.

6. Pay 10% down or $1000, whichever is less if a deposit is required.

7. Don’t let payments get ahead of work. Keep records of payments.

8. Don’t make the final payment until you’re satisfied with the job.

9. Don’t pay cash.

10.Keep a job file of all papers relating to your project.
