Arkansas City Hosts Purple Heart Ceremony

On July 12, 2024, the City of Arkansas City held a Purple Heart Ceremony to honor the brave men and women who have sacrificed for our country.

The event began with a welcome and the Pledge of Allegiance led by Randy Frank, Past Commander of the Department of Kansas American Legion. This was followed by an invocation from Gary Bowker, MSgt. U.S. Air Force (Ret.) and Arkansas City Fire/EMS Department Chaplain. The ceremony also included performances by the Arkansas City Community Band.

Angela Evans, Commander of the Department of Kansas American Legion, was the keynote speaker. She delivered a moving speech about her grandfather, a Purple Heart recipient.

Veterans, city officials, and community members attended the ceremony to pay tribute to Purple Heart recipients and all veterans.

"The event underscored our city's commitment to recognizing the sacrifices made by those who have served in the armed forces. The designation of Arkansas City as a Purple Heart City is a testament to our dedication to supporting and honoring our veterans,” said City Manager Randy Frazer.

Arkansas City was officially declared a Purple Heart City in January when Mayor Jay Warren signed a proclamation at the January 16 City Commission meeting. During the July 12 ceremony, Mayor Warren re-read the proclamation. At the conclusion, Arkansas City Police Chief Jim Holloway and Arkansas City Fire/EMS Chief Stuart Cassaboom unveiled signage installed at the city limits, prominently displaying the city's status as a Purple Heart City.

"Our goal is to inspire other cities in Cowley County to join us in this honor, potentially making Cowley County the first in the state with all cities designated as Purple Heart Cities," Frazer said.
