City of Arkansas City Implements Water Watch

Recognizing the importance of maintaining an adequate water supply for its residents' health, safety, and welfare, the City Commission passed a resolution on August 6 declaring Arkansas City under a Class 1, Stage 1 Water Watch.

Given the current conditions that suggest a potential drought or other factors that could lead to a shortage in the City's water supply, the City of Arkansas City has decided to implement proactive measures to conserve water resources. The voluntary water watch addresses the potential water supply shortage due to these probable drought conditions.

"Currently, our water storage is down to about 80 percent, and we've been ending the day with around 65 percent storage. This means a significant main break or any similar issue could put us in trouble. That's the reason for the water watch declaration," Rod Philo, Environmental Services Superintendent, said.

Key Points of the Water Watch Resolution:

  1. Effective immediately, the public is asked to reduce water use, especially for the following activities voluntarily:
    • Watering gardens, lawns, trees, and recreational areas.
    • Washing vehicles, boats, trailers, or building exteriors.
  2. Voluntary Conservation: Everyone is encouraged to use water wisely and reduce nonessential uses to help conserve water and prevent waste.
  3. Duration: The water watch will stay in place until conditions improve, and the City of Arkansas City will announce the end of the watch when appropriate.

“Currently, we are not facing a water shortage, but it's important to manage our resources wisely to avoid any potential issues," said Philo. "We ask all residents to take this water watch seriously and assist us in conserving water to maintain a stable supply."
