Arkansas City. Secures $240,000 Federal Grant to Improve Road Safety

Governor Laura Kelly has announced that Arkansas City is among four Kansas communities awarded more than $1.1 million in federal funding from the U.S. Department of Transportation's Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) Program, made possible by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL). Arkansas City will receive $240,000 in federal funding to develop a comprehensive Safety Action Plan aimed at improving road safety and reducing crashes.

“This grant represents a significant investment in the safety and well-being of our residents,” said Nick Rizzio, Municipal Project Manager for the City of Arkansas City. “By analyzing accident patterns and addressing the factors contributing to crashes, we are taking proactive steps to create safer streets for everyone—drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians alike.”

The SS4A grant will fund the creation of a Safety Action Plan, which focuses on:

• Identifying high-risk areas for accidents.

• Analyzing root causes of crashes.

• Developing data-driven strategies to reduce traffic incidents and enhance safety.

The project is supported by a $3,000 local funding match and $57,000 in contributions from the Build Kansas Fund, bringing the total project cost to $300,000.

The Safety Action Plan will incorporate community input, expert analysis, and innovative solutions to address Arkansas City's unique traffic safety challenges. This initiative aligns with the City's ongoing commitment to creating a safe, thriving, and accessible transportation network for all residents and visitors.

The City of Arkansas City is grateful to the U.S. Department of Transportation and the Build Kansas Fund for supporting this initiative. As progress is made, the public will receive updates on the development of the Safety Action Plan.
