Community Center Offers Afterschool, Summer Care

With a rich history and a commitment to serving the citizens of Arkansas City, the Northwest Community Center has become a hub for people of all ages to come together, learn, and have fun.

At the helm of the center is Cindy Bennett, director of the Northwest Community Center since 2005. Bennett’s presence at the facility on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and her extended hours on Thursdays, from noon to 8 p.m., make her a driving force behind what many consider one of Arkansas City's best-kept secrets.

The NWCC, 615 W. Birch Ave., offers an extensive array of activities to engage and empower young minds. From assisting with homework to providing access to computers for school assignments and job applications, the center ensures children have access to a productive and nurturing environment.

"The kids come in after school, and we do activities. They can get on the computers and do their schoolwork or apply for jobs. On Thursday, we have an outreach program with different activities," Bennett said.

The center also boasts a wide range of amenities designed to cater to the interests of its students, including Wii games, a pool table, ping pong, volleyball, air hockey, and basketball. In addition, Bennett’s passion for dance shines through as she teaches dance classes – a tradition she has upheld in the community for 49 years.

"I conduct dance classes at the center every Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. Priced at just $45, these classes are open to all age groups and cover ballet, tap, jazz, hip hop, lyrical, character, clog, and gymnastics. I've had multiple generations of families in my dance classes, and I'm on track to celebrate 50 years of teaching."

For those seeking event spaces, the NWCC is available for rentals at a rate of $150, accompanied by a $100 refundable deposit.

Notably, Bennett also serves as the director of the Cleo Graves Memorial Hogan, 300 E. Poplar Ave., another community space available for rentals at a fee of $75, with a $75 refundable deposit.
